Ski Krippenstein

The freeride capital of the region.

Krippenstein overview

The Krippenstein Freeride Arena is one of the premier Freeride / off-piste ski areas in the Alps. The ski lifts and ski pistes are limited in number but the off-piste terrain is hard to beat. Local guides operate throughout the area with some serious off-piste routes on offer on the Variante Schonberg.

For those wanting to ski on-piste there is an 11km ski piste from the Krippenstein Freeride Arena down to the wonderful and authentic lakeside ski holiday resort of Obertraun.

Krippenstein skiing

With just 3 ski lifts and limited on-piste skiing the Krippenstein Freeride Arena is very much akin to Stuben am Arlberg and Sainte Foy or La Grave in France. But what lies behind the limited stats of the Krippenstein Freeride Arena is superb off-piste skiing and snowboarding and serious amounts of snow. Krippenstein Freeride Arena is little known outside of the region but is the centre for off-piste and freeriding in the area south of Salzburg. Local guides are essential and available for accessing this serious terrain.

The Variante Schonberg offers routes that are a mixture of extreme steeps, cliffs, and tree skiing, all overlooking the nearby lake and often deep in powder. For any serious off-piste powder skier or snowboarder then the Krippenstein Freeride Arena has to be on their hit-list. For those visiting the Krippenstein Freeride Arena and wanting a more sedate experience, the ski piste back from the top station to the base station is 11km long. And for those wanting to plenty of intermediate skiing then the Dachstein West ski region is just down the valley and is a large intermediate ski area.
